It can't really be assault when there are two willing participants.
The fight in the picture was the result of a cheap shot that had happened a minute or so before. Usually both teams know there is going to be a fight and both send out their fighter of choice. This is different than some of the brutal attacks on the ice that HAVE been prosecuted. Swinging a stick at the back of someone's head is just a little different than two guys agreeing to go at it-and there is "protocol" which is followed.
I guess my point is, like it or not, it is part of the game

Assault charges and a long term suspension for such behavior would get me to watch hockey again.
Part of the game my ass. It's not part of football, rugby or any of the other physical games I've played.
With this said I must confess that I really like watching NASCAR crashes.
