New toys. The Trek begins its leap to the modern era

For the longest time I have dismissed any thoughts of upgrading my 1985 Trek 760 to any sort of "modern" drive train. While I never could call myself a fan of using shifters on the downtube, I resigned myself to that being my reality for the foreseeable future. Until the day came around that I could afford to buy a new road bike I was stuck in the routine of putting off shifting my 12 speed transmission unless it was absolutely needed. I would need to change too many parts and alter the frame itself to bring the bike into the era of handlebar based index shifting.

Then, out of the blue, a co-worker offered to sell me pretty much everything I needed for a price I could not pass up-and it was almost all CAMPAGNOLO!!!!! I ended up getting a set of 10 speed Veloce Brake levers/shifters, a Veloce rear derailleur, a Campy Khamsin wheelset, a second cassette, a set of Mavic brakes, a set of tires and a few other nick-nacks for an unreal price. Since I already have a Campy Record 10 speed crank and front derailleur the front end of the drivetrain was already taken care of.

The only piece up in the air was the frame itself. Over the years industry standards have changed as technology moved along the path of inevitable advancement. When my bike was built the standard for spacing between the rear dropouts was 126mm. With the advent of 8, 9 and 10 speed drive trains that spacing was increased to 130mm to make more room for the additional gears. Four lousy millimeters.

After a little consultation with Mr. Google and the late great Sheldon Brown I learned that my frame could easily be "cold set" to the new spacing. This involves careful application of graduated force using tools to make sure everything stays lined up and parallel. In other words the frame is physically bent to accept the new spacing. It turns out that the Reynolds 531c tubing on my Trek frame is ideal for this type of manipulation (how's that for a tech term?). Even better was finding out that I could have it done for around twenty bucks!

Tonight I did some teardown and attached some of the new stuff. The frame bending will hopefully happen this week with final assembly in the near future.

Now of course I couldn't leave my Stumpjumper feeling neglected-Especially since Q has been upgrading the shit out of his Enduro. His bike is going to kick some serious ass when he is done-not that it didn't before.

I placed an order today for Specialized's version of the remotely adjustable seatpost. The ability to adjust seatpost height on the fly while trail riding has always struck me as a worthwhile "feature". This spring I will be able to finally give it a try.

I've been in Jackson Hole Wyoming since Sunday with what seems to be about 150 immediate and extended family members. Lots of hiking biking and amazing scenery.

We have all been feeling the effects of the 6000+ foot altitude. My first bike ride on what the locals call the "easy" trail nearly did me in. The trail even has the somewhat dismissive name of "Putt-Putt". It started with a climb and never let up. No chance to recover. Since then, we have been slowly biking a dirt road most of the way up, then biking DOWN the single track. Much more enjoyable that way.

Tomorrow we head to the Laramie area with a much smaller group of people. The cabins we will be staying in there are at 10,000 feet. That should make the lack of oxygen here look like child's play. Unfortunately the Minnesota budget crisis has torpedoed my Dad's plans to join us there. Another reason to despise the current crop of GOP nutjobs in the state legislature. Thanks assholes!

Today I came up with a brilliant, two part plan.

Part one-Throw the road bike on the bus in the morning and use it to ride home after work.

Part two-When I get home on the road bike, throw the mountain bike in the car and zip over to Theodore Wirth for a couple of laps on dirt.

There was one flaw in this plan, my bicycles' engine in not running very well-too much inactivity over winter. By about half way through the first lap at Wirth I was sucking wind and feeling a little "off". I just could not get in the groove and start flowing down the trail. At the end of the first lap I sat at the trail head trying to catch my breath and get my heart rate back down out of the stratosphere. While wiping sweat from my eyes I debated taking a second lap or heading back to the car. The car sounded pretty good.

Then the decision was made for me.

A guy rolled up to the trail head and I pulled one of those classic inner dialogs "Is that....? No. Wait. Shit, yes it is." Sure enough it was an old friend that I haven't seen in years. Lots of years. Turns out hes a bike nut, has been mountain biking for years and even works for Erik's Bikes. So we sat and caught up, talked bikes and picked up like it had only been a week since we had seen each other. Of course when he asked if I was going to do another lap there was no way I was going to say no.

He took off like someone who has been riding all winter. I knew the pace was going to be fast but I was determined not to get dropped.

Now here's the funny thing. Even though I was more fatigued than when I got there my previous unease on the bike was gone. I was hitting the right lines, staying off the brakes and having way more fun. It is remarkable how riding behind a faster rider can get you to push yourself a little harder. I managed to more or less keep up with him for the entire lap. What I thought was going to turn into a lame ride ended up being a lot of fun.

All fun aside, I was D-U-N done when I got back to the car-just spent. I got back to the house and was standing on my back steps when I realized I was trying to unlock my house with the key fob for my car. I laughed at myself and remembered the time I tried to unclip from my accelerator pedal in almost the same set of circumstances.

I made myself some dinner and cracked a beer. Turned into a pretty good evening.

I don't think I will have any trouble falling asleep.

Q and I got together and headed to NE Minneapolis to pay a visit to this year's Artcrank. A "bike culture" art show and, well, party. When we got there we encountered a large crowd of people way cooler than we are.

We also saw some guys wearing matching racing team jackets and leather pants. They had this odd TV evangelist hair thing going too.

Of course we bought some art. Why else would we be there? Besides the free beer and the free music and the crowd watching and the....wait, what was I talking about?

After finishing up at Artcrank (the beer ran out) we headed over to Grumpy's to finally see my old friend Shawn Walker's band-Gay Witch Abortion. It took all of twenty seconds into the first song for me to be reminded what an absolutely gifted drummer he is. GWA is a drum and guitar two piece that creates a massive wall of sound. I definitely will be seeing these guys again. They had them playing in this little hallway of a room, so it was impossible to get close for some good photos.

Of course not really having any lights on the band didn't help either

All in all a fun evening. Now I have to get over to Q's. I left my stuff there.

I manged to get my ass on the bike and ride around in the sunshine today. Damn it felt good. Nothing like navigating the Lake Superior sized puddles that highlight our metro bike trails while cruising down the paved ribbon that winds between still sizable snowbanks. What didn't feel so good was having to lengthen the waist strap on my camelback. A not so pleasant reminder of my beer filled inactive winter. Yikes.

Swung by the local convenience store, Yesmart. For some reason they weren't open.

I guess they sold out their entire inventory during their "smoked everything" sale.

Are bikes art?

Can a bunch of tubing stuck together and hooked to wheels to provide transportation be considered art? Let's take a look.

Back in the day Merlin Bicycles put out a bike called the "Newsboy" It was a modern mountainbike, but the frame looked like the old cruisers from the fifties-and it was made from Titanium. I fell in love with the look right away. Merlin doesn't make the Newsboy anymore, but there are custom builders out there doing essentially the same thing. Here are a couple of gorgeous examples from the North American Handmade Bicycle Show in Austin Texas.

First up, the Retrotec Classic. This is a steel frame with 650B wheels (in between 26" and 29"). This particular build has an internally geared 11 speed hub. The builder concedes that he has no idea whether or not that hub would hold up to off road abuse, but he wanted to give it a try. It can also be built as a single or 1x9/10

Then we have the Funk Ti Classic Cruiser. It is made out of Titanium and designed to have about an inch of flex in the rear end. They accomplish this by welding the stays to the top tube a couple on inches in front of the seat tube instead of directly to the seat tube. They can pull this off because Titanium can flex without fatiguing. This appears to have the Easton Haven carbon 29" wheelset-Very expensive, very light, and virtually indestructible.

The great thing about custom builders is they take pride in making sure their bikes not only ride great, but look great. Some of the photos I have seen from this years NAHBS are simply stunning. It is worth noting that local Twin Cities builder Dave Anderson won the "President's Choice" award for this stainless steel creation.

You have heard it a million times, and quite often it is true-The sequel to x isn't nearly as good as the first one. I have another fine example.

I sat down and watched Swedish movie "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" and was very impressed. DAMN good movie. You learn more and more about the two main characters as the movie unfolds. They aren't just cliche personalities you see so often in Hollywood thrillers. The movie makes you CARE about them and want to learn more with each tidbit that the film maker doles out. Lisbeth Salandar is a very damaged woman, possibly with asperger's, who still manages to be ridiculously strong despite the crap heap that was her childhood. On top of it, the mystery the two characters are working on is intriguing and keeps you guessing as to just what happened.

I liked Tattoo so much, right away I decided "What the heck, I'll watch the next one" So I queued up "The Girl Who Played With Fire". While not a bad movie it is nowhere as interesting as the first film. It seems the new director was just content to let the established characters go through the motions in a story that wasn't nearly as interesting. It relied on plot twists that began to border on the absurd. Granted there where a few parts that had me grinning and muttering "kick ass", but they were highlights in a far less engaging whole. I haven't read any of the books, so I cannot say how close either of these movies was to the source material-maybe the second book was a big letdown as well.

Hollywood is currently making an American version of "Tattoo". I can't say I have high hopes. I just can't see this American version trusting its viewers to have the patience to let a story and its characters unfold slowly over two hours. I expect they will try to spice it up by upping the action quotient. That would be a bad plan.

Fake pimp from ACORN videos tries to 'punk' CNN correspondent

Lusby, Maryland (CNN) -- A conservative activist known for making undercover videos plotted to embarrass a CNN correspondent by recording a meeting on hidden cameras aboard a floating "palace of pleasure" and making sexually suggestive comments, e-mails and a planning document show.

James O'Keefe, best known for hitting the community organizing group ACORN with an undercover video sting, hoped to get CNN Investigative Correspondent Abbie Boudreau onto a boat filled with sexually explicit props and then record the session, those documents show.

The plan apparently was thwarted after Boudreau was warned minutes before it was supposed to happen...

O'Keefe is best known for making a series of undercover videos inside ACORN offices around the country in 2009. The 40-year-old liberal group was crippled by scandal after O'Keefe and fellow activist Hannah Giles allegedly solicited advice from ACORN workers on setting up a brothel and evading taxes...

But prosecutors in New York and California eventually found no evidence of wrongdoing by the group, and the California probe found the videos had been heavily and selectively edited.

Fortunate Surprise

While walking home from the bus stop today I noticed a bunch of posts and what looked like course tape filling up a good chunk of Aquila park. I figured something was going on, but I wasn't sure what. A short time later I was walking the dogs and saw that there was a cyclocross race going on a half block from my house! COOL! It is part of a series put on by the Minnesota Cycling Federation

I finished up with dog duty then returned to the course with my camera. Watching folks hammer through the grass for multiple laps in the same park where the hill has me sucking wind after walking up it was humbling. And there I sat with no cowbell.

For some reason there was one racer who stood out. Dressed all in black, big bushy beard riding a gorgeous singlespeed which I thought at the time was Ti. Turns out it is a nickle plated steel frame made right here in the Twin Cities by Peacock Groove. The detail work on this bike was amazing. This guy finished first (I think) in the 35+ race, then 15 minutes later he was at it again in the Cat 1,2,3 field and was leading after two laps. I had to bail at that point so I don't know how he did, but DAMN!

Anyway, I was happy to find out that this will be happening every Tuesday for eight weeks. I need to get a cowbell.

Its easy to find numerous examples of hyperbole in the mountain bike world. The word "epic" has been used so much, often describing things that are in no way "epic", that it has lost its meaning.

That being said, these guys truly had an epic journey. Biking 60 miles into the Alaskan wilderness, then breaking out portable rafts that they carried with them and proceeded for miles on a 34 degree river for 12 hours. They then bushwhacked, hiked and biked there way to visit the bus made famous in "Into the Wild"

I am impressed.

Wonders of physiology

This evening I took my second bike ride since breaking my right ankle. The first ride was on the mountain bike. Big fat tires, full suspension and a relatively upright riding position. Today I ventured out and took the same route, but this time on the road bike. Rigid steel frame, skinny tires pumped up to 100psi and a much more aggressive riding position.

The ride went surprising well, but had one unexpected curiosity. My ankle is still swollen. It is noticeably larger than its counterpart on the end of my left leg. On the ride today every time I hit the transition to cross a street and with every seam in the trail, I could feel whatever biological "stuff" that is IN my swollen ankle jiggling around like a bowl of jello. It didn't hurt, but the sensation was mildly disturbing. Part of my brain kept repeating "That's not right" every time it happened. Before heading out today, I had entertained the idea of hitting an off road trail sooner that the doctor recommended. After feeling the mini tsunamis in the fluid of my ankle, I think I will heed his advice.

Went to the doc and had the cast removed. After a new set of x-rays and a mobility test the Dr. said there is no need for a walking boot! Still not 100% as far as moving around goes, but it is so nice feeling the breeze on my leg!

Between almost constant rain this month and creeping laziness on my part I had yet to do the bike commute home from work.

I finally got the rare combination of motivation and a favorable forecast today and biked home in bright humid sunshine.

The route home to the Richfield house is an entirely different animal than when we were is St Louis Park. City streets all the way to Richfield instead of 90% isolated bike path to SLP. The distance is about the same, but the need to have your head on a constant swivel while cruising down the bike lane on Portland avenue makes it a much less relaxing ride. No pedaling on autopilot while reflecting on the day or thinking about the upcoming evening-that would be a recipe for disaster. But I still feel good after the ride.

Went up to Bay Lake this weekend to see how the remodel is going at the Huntley cabin. I haven't been up there since fall when the additions were nothing more than holes in the ground. Can't wait to see this when it is done.

Rush Limbaugh proves with no wiggle room whatsoever that he really is a racist bastard.

“I am reasonably sure that Paterson will be appointing the replacement, assuming that he, you know, doesn’t resign in the next 60 or 90 days,” a caller said to Limbaugh.

“Let’s assume you’re right,” Limbaugh responded. “So, David Paterson will become the massa…who gets to appoint whoever gets to take Massa’s place. So, for the first time in his life, Paterson’s gonna be a massa. Interesting, interesting.”

For those who might not know, Paterson is the African American Governor of New York. Massa is a congressman who is resigning.
